It is the thirty first century - over two hundred years since the solar system was left devastated by a huge pulse of energy from the sun, the survivors of the human race eke out a fragile existence on an earth where life has been twisted and warped by the radiation and where the Solanists - a dark and brutal religious cult - hold sway.

In this savage, ignorant world, one family tries to protect their mutated daughter, a demon in the eyes of the world, something to be feared and hunted. Their only chance lies with the enigmatic and dangerous gunslinger known as Crystal Eyes, the deadliest demon to ever travel the badlands. Only with her help will they evade the Solanist preachers who hunt for them, but she has her own hunter - the greatest preacher of them all on a quest for revenge.

Crystal Eyes eBook Allen Donnelly Karen Bridgeman

This book is a stand alone; there is no cliffhanger. There is no follow up book at the time of this writing. This is a clean read without sexual situations or language. There is no cursing. This book is suggested for late teens.

Hundreds of years ago a technology-dependent society was devastated by a huge electro-magnetic discharge from the sun. The radiation also released was enough to cause mutations in plants and humans. Children born with mutations are called demons and actively searched out and killed by priests of the only religion, Solarism. The priests worship the sun.

Christine is born in a typical village to typical parents. At first, she is thought to be blind, but her parents find beautiful crystals where her eyes are supposed to be. As she grows she discovers her ability to blend into surroundings to the point it almost appears she can be invisible.

After a tragedy she is captured and escapes. At this point in the story plot becomes an old Zane Grey Western. She changes her name to Crystal Eyes and wanders around the Old West.

The character of Crystal Eyes is interesting but dull. Purposely emotionless, she shows little to no interest in what she's doing, who she's with, or where she is. This makes it hard to care for her and her actions. Every other character dealt with in the story is more colorful and interesting.

There is a kernel of a great adventure story trying to break through. Unfortunately, in order to raise it above the morose and uninteresting main character, Crystal Eye's personality needs a make over.

Crystal Eyes eBook Allen Donnelly Karen Bridgeman Reviews

I've read both Crystal books and enjoyed the ride. It was a pleasure to see such a strong female protagonist. I feel like the author is leading me on a journey with Crystal. Even though the setting is post-apocalyptic I hope that Crystal is given a chance to have a real relationship with someone in the third book. Please keep them coming!
I was introduced to this book through another site. And I'm very glad I was.
The story is extremely engaging. It grabbed me from the start. The author will make you care for a character, and then break your heart. The emotional ups and downs kept me turning (figurativly speaking) pages long into the night.
Other reviewers have explained the story/plot, so I want to give my personal thoughts. My first impression is that it is a cross between The Dark Tower series and X-Men. But in fact it goes much deeper.
My lasting impression is that it is an excellent commentary on the state of religion. In "Crystal Eyes," the dominant religion is Solarism, believers in the sun, Sol, as a God. The followers are Zealots, hating any who do not follow. I'm not sure if it was intended, but it made me think of the ultra evangelical followers of the "Son." Intended or not, I thoroughly enjoyed this take on it.
It's been a couple of months since I read Crystal Eyes but I felt like I needed to "rest" a bit before I wrote a review. My knee-jerk reaction would have been to gush all over the page about how much I loved this book. The cooling off period was necessary so I could be as objective as possible. Note that I gave the book 5 stars. LOL

Here's the thing about Crystal Eyes... its just plain, old fun. It's easy to read and narrative rolls along, with you happily bouncing along with it. Don't misunderstand me. This isn't a comedy. Sure, there are bits of humor in writing but, overall, it's a fairly serious story about a post-apocalyptic US, filled with mutants and gunslingers and people just trying to survive. However, the same way a dramatic Western movie can enjoyably carry you away, Crystal Eyes sweeps you off your feet - and makes you wish there was a sequel so you could follow the story further.

Bits to love include all the central characters - both good and bad - because you can understand both sides of their stories; the story arc itself because it jumps through time by decades and the jumps are handled with incredible skill; the narrative's ability to paint a clear, movie-like picture of what's happening. As a matter of fact, the entire time I was reading it, I could picture the movie that could be made from it.

Bit to not like as much include the title. I really would have preferred something else. Maybe just "Crystal". For some reason, the title feels sophomoric to me and I can't articulate why. Also, the author's use of distinctly British terminology and/or colloquialisms throughout the book (albeit sporadically). This is supposed to be post-apocalyptic United States so, unless the Brits had re-colonized us before the apocalypse or there was some other plausible explanation for why Americans in the future would use British vernacular, it was a little distracting. (Full disclosure, I'm a writer and a huge word nerd so these are the details that bug me - perhaps they don't bug others.) Truthfully, I can get over it.

This book delivers story-telling at it's best. If you're looking for a fun read for a weekend - something you simply can't put down - this is the book you want to buy.

Now, I wait patiently for the sequel and for someone to option it as a movie. )
