Excerpt from The Land of the Blue Flower

The Land of the Blue Flower was not called by that name until the tall, strong, beautiful King Amor came down from his castle on the mountain crag and began to reign. Before that time it was called King Mordreth's Land, and as the first King Mordreth had been a fierce and cruel king this seemed a gloomy name.

This short story is a fairy tale written by Frances Hodgson Burnett (author of The Secret Garden and A Little Princess, amongst others.)

In this tale, a young king orders all of his citizens to plant and care for a blue flower. Although the people find the law unusual, they comply, with amazing results.

This sweet story is simple with a beautiful moral that everyone should learn. I definitely recommend this one!

Very interesting; thought provoking, a good read.
Such a beautiful simple truth is taught in this story. This is a story of how positive thinking and hard work bring joy and beauty to a poor wretched kingdom where the people have only known misery, selfishness, hate, envy and all that is depressing. This book would be a blessing for children everywhere.
"There is no time for anger." this phrase has a wonderful meaning and is the center of the story. The Land of the Blue Flower is about a prince raised in the mountains by a an old scholar after his mothers death. he learns to respect nature and about the power of love. This is a GREAT read that EVERYONE should read. just buy it! its free on kindle. (FYI Burnett is lovely author. i recommed all her books to everyone who loved A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. buy this book!!)
What a beautiful simple story. The lessons it teaches are powerful. I have loved Burnett's other books, Little Lord Fauntlaroy and Little Princess. This story had all the beauty and power of those packed into a sweet short story! Worth reading and re-reading.
This was a beautiful story depicting the power of love and service. "There is no time for anger." This theme is repeated throughout the book and it tells a wonderful story of how a whole kingdom was changed, because they learned to create beauty which did not include squabbling, hate, or laziness. Highly recommend reading this book to your children. The principles taught in this book are powerful and if practiced by all could change every person's life.
Wonderful story about a king raised away from the filth of the world by a wise man and how he changed an entire kingdom by commanding they nurture, each one of them, a blue flower from an emperor's secret garden. All are uplifted by the nurturing experience. Beautiful allegory.
Personally, I thought this little book had a very profound message that will ring through my thoughts, and hopefully my actions, for the rest of my life. This message reminds me of the adage, "We make our choices and our choices make us." I would highly recommend that families and close friends read this together to exchange insights and help one another put principle into practice. Easy quick read with a relevant and long-lasting message. There were elements that I did not necessarily agree with, but I could easily overlook in favor of the much bigger truths.
